Understanding STCW Revalidation:
What Seafarers Need to Know

STCW revalidation is one of the most misunderstood processes in maritime careers. Many seafarers wait too long, choose the wrong pathway, or pay more than necessary. This guide breaks down exactly what you need to know.

What Is STCW Revalidation?

Under the STCW Convention, most certificates of competency and proficiency must be revalidated every five years. Revalidation confirms that you continue to meet the standards of competence required for your rank and function — it is not the same as renewing a certificate from scratch.

The revalidation process varies by flag state administration, but the STCW Convention provides two main pathways for most certificates.

The Two Revalidation Pathways

Pathway 1: Approved Training

Complete approved refresher courses before your certificate expires. Typically requires Basic Safety Training (BST) refresher, medical fitness certificate, and any specialist course renewals.

Pathway 2: Approved Sea Service

Demonstrate at least 1 year of sea service in the past 5 years in a capacity relevant to the certificate. Many administrations accept this in lieu of refresher training for some certificates.

Common Mistakes Seafarers Make

After advising hundreds of seafarers on revalidation, these are the most common — and avoidable — mistakes:

1

Waiting until the last minute. Many administrations have processing backlogs. Leaving revalidation to the final weeks before expiry risks being unable to work while your paperwork is processed.

2

Assuming all certificates revalidate the same way. BST, GMDSS, Advanced Firefighting, and CoC revalidation each have different requirements. Confusing them leads to incomplete applications.

3

Not checking flag state-specific requirements. Your administration's revalidation process may differ from the flag state of the vessel you're serving on. Both must be satisfied.

Key Takeaways

  • Start the revalidation process at least 6 months before expiry
  • Identify every certificate that needs revalidation — not just your CoC
  • Check both your administration and relevant flag state requirements
  • Choose the most cost-effective pathway for your specific sea service record
  • When in doubt, get independent advice before paying for any course
